Marketing Minutes: Quick Facebook Workaround

This Trick Dodges Facebook’s New Algorithm, Expands Reach

If you own a brand that has an active presence on Facebook, by now you have surely noticed a drastic change in traffic. Facebook’s new algorithm slashed reach for brand pages, showing as few as 5% or 10% of posts to a brand’s fans at any given time. Most brands have been forced to some version of paid placement or post “boosts” to stay in the game.

While some advice for social media still holds true – create great content, utilize your existing assets, share social efforts across your team – there are a few little tricks that, for now, can fool the Facebook algorithm into showing your posts to more fans. Here’s one: Multiple media posts.

We know that good photos are more appealing in general to users than simple text updates. But new research shows that posting more than one photo at a time can stimulate reach and engagement to almost pre-2013 levels. Try posting four or more related photos, as a sort of mini-album, like this:

(And don’t forget to make your copy interesting and click-worthy, as well!)

Is this a long-term fix? Not likely, as Facebook regularly adjusts its algorithm and we can expect more changes in the future. But for the time being, multiple media posting is a good quick trick for expanding organic reach and engagement.
