OUR GRAPHIC DESIGN WIZARD GIVES US A BREAKDOWN: PHOTOSHOP, INDESIGN & ILLUSTRATOR
Diving into the world of graphic design tools can feel like wandering through a maze of creativity. To help you navigate this, we reached out for help from our very own graphic design wizard, Oscar. He has sprinkled his magic over Adobe’s Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, and here’s his spellbinding breakdown of these essential tools!
Photoshop Basics: Can you give us an overview of what Photoshop is best used for in graphic design? What are its main strengths and features?
Just like the name suggests, it is best for editing, combining, and manipulating photos/images. It has the most features for creating incredible images.
Illustrator Essentials: Moving on to Illustrator, what makes it the go-to tool for graphics?
It is the best tool to bring everything together. You can combine images from Photoshop, PDFs, assets from clients, and create new graphics all in the same file.
Illustrator Tools: What are some of the most essential tools and features in Illustrator that you think every designer should know about?
The ability to link files across the different tools is a lifesaver. For example, you can have a file created in Illustrator with an edited photo from Photoshop. If you make a change to your Photoshop file and save it, those changes should automatically appear in the Illustrator file as well. This compatibility works with InDesign as well, making everything more efficient.
Tips for Beginners: For someone just starting out with these tools, what advice or resources would you recommend to help them get up to speed?
Use the appropriate tool for the job. Don’t try to do everything using just Photoshop.
Creative Inspiration: How do you stay inspired and keep your designs fresh while working with these tools? Are there any specific techniques or approaches you use?
Take in the world around you. Inspiration can come from anywhere. I’m constantly looking around for elements I can use in my next project, whether it’s a color or a certain style.
Client Collaboration: How do you handle client feedback and revisions when using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign? Do you have any strategies for streamlining this process?
I try to separate the individual elements of a design as much as I can so that if a client has changes, I can go back and modify that specific element without starting over. This ensures that I don’t waste time and our projects stay on budget.
